A Pilot Study for Enhancing Postpartum Discharge Instructions for Incision Care: Assessment of Comprehension
Literacy and Health Care
• 14.5% of United States is illiterate 1
• Reading level of most medical forms is 10th grade 2
Improving Outcomes with a Visual Aid
• Cesarean Surgical Site Infection (SSI) rate is 5% 3
• A patient with a SSI can be 2 times as expensive 4
• Visual aids improve information recall 8 and confidence in wound care 5
Study Objectives
1. To evaluate the readability of the cesarean wound care discharge instructions relative to the patient population’s reading level
2. To conduct a pilot Randomized Control Trial (RCT) to evaluate the effectiveness of a visual aid on improving comprehension of the cesarean wound care instructionshttps://jdc.jefferson.edu/cwicposters/1034/thumbnail.jp
Improving the Patient Colonoscopy Prep Experience
AIM:
To improve patient prep compliance, prep quality, and an overall better experience by designing a prep specific website that will address the most common prep questions and concerns
Once launched, the website address will be placed on printed colonoscopy prep instructions and stated on the after hours GI clinic voicemail as an additional patient resourcehttps://jdc.jefferson.edu/patientsafetyposters/1049/thumbnail.jp
Psychosis in a Case of Mycoplasma Pneumonia Encephalopathy
Mycoplasma pneumonia, a well known cause of acute respiratory infection in man, has been reported to frequently include central nervous system manifestations as part of its clinical course (1,2). The spectrum of neurologic syndromes associated with the disease is vast, ranging from direct invasion of brain and meninges by the organism to non-invasive parainfectious encephalopathy (3). This is a case report of an individual who presented to the emergency room in an acute psychotic state as the single manifestation of a parainfectious encephalopathy secondary to mycoplasma pneumonia infection of the lung
The Neuropsychiatric Syndrome of a Psychomotor Seizure Disorder in Shakespeare\u27s Othello, The Moor of Venice
Many of Shakespeare\u27s characters suffer from the myriad of medical and surgical ailments that afflict mankind. Although many of these diseases serve merely to enhance the subtle shading of character in Shakespearean drama, certain disorders seem to provide a vital focus for the basic theme and plot development of the plays. No group of disorders is more implicated by the behavior and thought patterns of Shakespeare\u27s characters than neuropsychiatric disease. Othello, the Moor of Venice stands out as a striking example of a tragedy
in which the main character suffers grievous consequences from a disease that affects his behavior and thereby directs the course and outcome of the play.
In this essay, I will attempt to correlate the history, signs, and symptoms of
Othello\u27s disease with recognized neurological conditions, specifically partial
psychomotor seizure disorders. I will cite many bits of evidence, although none
are conclusive without a physical examination and diagnostic electroencephalogram.
I will also make an argument in favor of Shakespeare\u27s medical as well as

Shoulder arthroscopy positioning: lateral decubitus versus beach chair.
Since the introduction of the beach chair position for shoulder arthroscopy, orthopaedic surgeons have debated whether the beach chair or lateral decubitus is superior. Most surgeons use the same patient position to perform all of their arthroscopic shoulder procedures, regardless of the pathology. Each position has its advantages and disadvantages. The evidence regarding the efficiency, efficacy, and risks of the lateral decubitus and the beach chair positions for shoulder arthroscopy does not show one position to be superior. This review presents a comparison of these positions with regard to setup, surgical visualization, access, and patient risk
Impact of Morbid Obesity on Left Ventricular Assist Device Support and Heart Transplantation
Morbidly obese patients requiring LVAD support encounter higher postoperative complications and wait longer for heart transplantation, however heart transplant and graft survival is comparable. Our study suggests that carefully selected morbidly obese patients should undergo LVAD placement and heart transplantation. However, our study was limited by a very small sample size and by the biases inherent to a retrospective data analysis
The karabus affair speaks to larger issues for american academic and medical centers.
Finally, on March 12, 2013, a major American newspaper, The Wall Street Journal, reported on the plight of Dr. Cyril Karabus (1,2). Dr. Karabus is the 78 year old pediatric oncologist from Claremont, Capetown, South Africa who is well known as the retired head of the Oncology and Hematology Unit of the Red Cross Children’s Hospital, University of Cape Town, as well as for his devoted service to poor children in the apartheid era. In 2002, he cared for a three-year old Yemeni girl with acute myelogenous leukemia during a locum tenens in the United Arab Emirates (UAE)
Upper Hunter Valley Particle Characterization Study 3rd Progress Report
The objective of the Upper Hunter Valley Particle Characterization Study is to determine the major components and sources of particulate matter (as PM2.5 – particles with a diameter of less than 2.5
micrometres) in the two main population centres in the Upper Hunter Valley, namely Singleton and Muswellbrook.
This 3rd Progress Report presents an update on the project and some quality checks of the data.© 2013 CSIR
